What Appliance Warranty Pages Leave Out
The number of years is the figure makers advertise. Whether those years cover labour, and which failures the page refuses, decide whether a repair costs nothing or several hundred dollars. Read on real warranty documents from Alliance Laundry Systems, GE Appliances and LG, checked October 2026.

An appliance warranty page answers three questions if you read it closely: how many years, whether those years cover parts only or parts and labour, and which failures it refuses to pay for. Makers advertise the first and bury the other two, which are the ones that decide whether a repair costs nothing or several hundred dollars. This guide reads the published warranty documents of Alliance Laundry Systems, the maker of Speed Queen home laundry, plus GE Appliances and LG, against the federal disclosure rules the FTC publishes. Whirlpool's warranty PDF returned an access-denied response on October 10, 2026, so no Whirlpool figures appear here.
Start with the split between parts and labour
The years figure means two different things depending on which half it covers. The Speed Queen home laundry warranty bond, dated February 2021 and read October 10, 2026, is unusually clear about the difference.
It states that Alliance Laundry Systems "will repair or replace, free of charge, any part which fails as a result of a defect in material or workmanship" and that it "will also pay the labor charges when service is provided by an Alliance Laundry Systems Authorized Service Company".
Then it tiers them. For mechanical control TR3 washers the document gives "Three (3) years parts and labor limited warranty on the complete washer" and separately "Five (5) year limited warranty on the motor", with "Year 4 through 5 parts only limited warranty".
Read that as a five-year motor warranty that stops paying technicians after year three. A service call on a year-four motor ships you a free part and an invoice for the labour, and most pages that advertise five years never print this distinction.
A lifetime warranty usually covers one component against one failure
The same document grants a "Lifetime limited warranty on the stainless steel tub and outer tub against rust or corrosion". That is one named part, against one named failure mode, and nothing else on the machine.
The longest finite term in the document works the same way: "Fifteen (15) year limited warranty on the transmission assembly", with "Year 4 through 15 parts only limited warranty" on the older TC5 models. The headline is fifteen; the labour stops at three.
The reading rule: a lifetime or long-term claim on a spec sheet should always be followed by the name of the part. If it is not, the page has not told you what is covered, and that is the question to send to support before buying.
Registration and the shop you buy from can change the term
Alliance ties the start date to registration. Its bond states that "for products that are not registered within the first year after shipment, warranty coverage will begin 30 days after shipment for North American shipments", which can quietly remove months from an unregistered machine.
Where you buy can add years. The GE Appliances limited product warranty page for Costco purchases states that GE Appliances "extends that portion of its Limited Warranty that runs for one (1) year for an additional one (1) year for a total of two (2) years".
LG attaches a term to an app. Its 26 cubic foot French door refrigerator page advertises "a 2-year limited warranty on select appliances purchased through December 31, 2026 via the ThinQ app", checked October 10, 2026.
Three makers, three different ways the same appliance can carry one year or two. The warranty term is not a property of the machine; it is a property of the transaction.
The exclusion list is where the real terms live
The Alliance document names what it will not pay for, and the list is longer than the coverage section. It is the most useful page in any warranty document, and the one makers never summarise on a product listing.
- "Any consequential damage resulting from any malfunction", which rules out a flooded floor or spoiled food
- Damage from "worn or cracked washer hoses", a part owners rarely replace on schedule
- Service costs "caused from home related issues", listing shut-off water valves, plugged drains and lint build-up
- Labour "that result from a service call where a unit is found to function as designed"
- Extra labour and travel beyond 50 miles from the selling dealer, described as "100 miles round trip"
- Damage to electrical components from "a fluctuating power supply", naming stand-by generators with uncontrolled output
- "Freight or transportation costs of any part covered under the terms of the product warranty"
Use pattern matters too. The same document states that in "a multiple user setting or commercial application, the unit limited warranty is three (3) years parts warranty only", and that machines in on-premises laundry settings drop to "one-year (12 months) parts only".
Federal law sets what the page must say, not how long it lasts
The gap between makers is legal. The FTC's guide to federal warranty law explains that the Magnuson-Moss Warranty Act requires written warranties on consumer products costing more than $10 to be titled either "full" or "limited".
The words are defined, not decorative. A full warranty meets federal minimum standards for comprehensive coverage, while "limited warranty" signals that the coverage "falls short of at least one federal standard". Almost every appliance document uses the second word.
The disclosure rule obliges warrantors to state coverage "in a single, clear, and easy-to-read document" for products above $15, and the pre-sale availability rule requires that written warranties be "available to consumers before they buy".
One protection is not waivable. The Act prohibits warrantors from "disclaiming or modifying implied warranties" when a written warranty is offered, though a limited warranty may restrict the duration of implied warranties to the written warranty period.
Pages that publish nothing are telling you something
Silence is a finding. Samsung's US warranty support page, read October 10, 2026, functions as a lookup tool and publishes no warranty lengths for refrigerators, washers or dishwashers; the only period stated applies to foreign repairs of phones and tablets.
Other categories do better. The power station makers surveyed in portable power station numbers that matter print a warranty term on the product page itself, while the robot vacuum pages read for robot vacuum suction claims print none at all.
Treat a missing warranty row the way you would treat a missing decibel figure in how to read an air purifier spec sheet or a missing weight in how to read a wireless headphone spec sheet. The absence lowers your confidence in everything beside it.
Frequently asked questions
How long is a typical home appliance warranty?
One year is the common baseline, with longer terms on named components. Speed Queen home laundry models run from three to seven years parts and labour depending on the model, per the February 2021 warranty bond read October 10, 2026, with lifetime cover on the tub against rust.
What is the difference between parts only and parts and labour?
Parts only ships you the component and bills you for the technician. Alliance Laundry Systems covers TR3 washer motors for five years but marks "Year 4 through 5 parts only", so a year-four motor repair means a free part and a labour invoice.
Does a lifetime warranty cover the whole appliance?
No. In the Speed Queen document the lifetime term applies to the "stainless steel tub and outer tub against rust or corrosion" and nothing else. A lifetime claim should always be followed by the name of a part and a failure mode.
Do I have to register an appliance to keep the warranty?
It can change the start date. Alliance states that unregistered products have coverage beginning "30 days after shipment" rather than installation. GE Appliances adds a second year for Costco purchases, and LG offers two years through its ThinQ app until December 31, 2026.
Can a maker refuse a repair because of my plumbing or power supply?
Yes, and the document says so. Alliance excludes service costs from "home related issues" such as shut-off valves and plugged drains, and reserves the right to void cover for electrical damage caused by "a fluctuating power supply" such as a generator.
What does the word limited mean on a warranty?
It is a federal label. The FTC states that a written warranty titled limited indicates coverage that falls short of at least one federal standard, while a full warranty meets them. The title is required on consumer products costing more than $10.
Bottom line
A complete appliance warranty page states the term in years, which years include labour, which named parts carry longer cover, what starts the clock, and the full exclusion list. As of October 10, 2026, Alliance Laundry Systems publishes all five and most makers publish only the first.
Find the exclusion list before you compare years. Ask support in writing whether the long term includes labour, and register the machine the day it arrives. The same discipline applies in standing desk spec sheets and monitor specs.
